Kat and Levon’s Ramble Hotel Wedding in Denver
Kat and Levon had a Ramble Hotel wedding in Denver’s RiNo neighborhood. Many know the hotel for its lobby restaurant, Death & Co, but there’s also a private upstairs bar and a great rooftop terrace which was perfect for a spring wedding. It was also perfect for one of my first weddings after things were suspended under Covid. The ceremony and reception were in the slate blue Vauxhall ballroom, but at least people could socialize and eat for hours on that outdoor terrace and feel perfectly normal doing so.

Levon reads a note from Kat.

Kat can do this slowly, methodically. I just thought wow, I need to stretch more.

Kat’s son came to the room to sign the marriage license as a witness.

A drink before the wedding. I get tradition, but it’s also nice to just chill a bit and enjoy the moment before becoming the center of attention. Things seem to go so fast once they start.

Kat waits for her cue. They entered from opposite sides of the ballroom, met in the middle, then danced up the aisle together.

If you dance up the aisle, you might as well dance down it.

Any questions?

Either the longest recessional or a walk around the block. I like it when people steal a little time for themselves before returning to be the center of attention. I say by themselves when clearly there were three people there, but I try to maintain such a boring non-presence that people just go about their business. You’re walking down the sidewalk and if you notice, there’s someone ahead of you. Also, you just got married. Which of those two details is more likely to hold your attention?

I’m 5’6″, and sometimes at a crowded wedding reception when I’m trying to see over someone’s back, I want those heels as well. Or lifts like Bono, or that Scientologist movie star who, while outwardly cocky, is always having a crisis of confidence but finds redemption in some woman’s arms, but not before he’s running really hard and grimacing because someone is chasing him.

Before every Ramble Hotel wedding, they have to make sure the neon tube on the fourth E hasn’t burned out.

I like second chances, and I like seeing kids brought along as an integral part of the union, not just bystanders at their parent’s wedding. Kat and Levon were really good about this. It can be tricky for kids, and the way they were so inclusive and checking in with their boys was very touching.

Yes, people wanted her heels, but you can’t really dance in those things.

First dance dips. It’s a thing.

The eyes tell the story, but I’m glad in this mostly post-Covid world that the pictures can show the whole expression again.

I play around a lot with lighting. Sometimes it’s available, sometimes flash that looks available, and sometimes I like to just pinpoint the things I find interesting. I like shadows, the occasional absence of context. Anything but bouncing off the ceiling, which is safe and reliable. Like overcooked food.
